Leicester City should go all out to sign John McGinn in the summer
According to the Birmingham Mail, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn in a bid to bolster his squad next summer.
The same report claims that Rodgers is a personal admirer of the Scottish international and had wanted to sign the midfielder at his former club Celtic.
McGinn, who signed for Aston Villa from Hibernian at the start of the season, has been one of the shining lights of Villa’s otherwise lacklustre campaign so far. The 24-year-old has accumulated 2 goals and 8 assists from 30 appearances in the Championship, emerging as one of the mainstays of the midfield under Steve Bruce and Dean Smith.
A product of Scottish club St.Mirren, McGinn rose to prominence with his boyhood club and furthered his development at Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership and Championship before flying across the border to join promotion hopefuls Aston Villa. A regular for Scotland at all youth levels, the left-footed midfield ace has already bagged 13 caps for his nation at the senior international level since his debut back in 2016.
Brendan Rodgers didn’t have the best possible start to his time at Leicester City, with the former Liverpool manager seeing his team slump to a 2-1 defeat to Watford on his return to the Premier League. However, he should have some positives to take from the performances of Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans. The Belgian once again showed his obvious quality on the ball and used his vision to find the run of Vardy, who rattled the net with a clinical finish.
Lack of creativity in central midfield has been one of the major reasons behind Leicester’s lacklustre campaign in the Premier League. Wilfred Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy have been regular faces but the duo has been less than spectacular with their performances. Not only have they lacked quality and composure on the ball but they have also misplaced the easiest of passes way too often, which has proved detrimental to the build-up play in the middle of the park. The breath of fresh air that was so desperately needed in the midfield came in the form of Tielemans in January but it is still not clear whether the Foxes will be able to make his stay permanent at the end of the season.
And that is why the club’s links with John McGinn should be an exciting proposition for the fans. Unlike Mendy and Ndidi, McGinn is a more balanced central midfielder who can light up the scene with his creativity and vision, whilst also been exceptionally skilful on the ball for a player in his position. A technically-gifted midfielder, the Scotsman has a sweet left foot that is capable of finding the net with pile drivers from outside the box. Furthermore, he also has the ability to break up the play with tackles and interceptions, whilst also being good in the air.

The likes of Vicente Iborra and Adrien Silva do not seem to have a future at the club and Leicester need to get rid of deadwood to accommodate fresh faces. The Foxes need to plan for the long-term under Brendan Rodgers and John McGinn would be a welcome addition to the squad.
