Dieng started playing basketball in his high school days at SEEDS Academy. He was not only good at basketball but also at academics too. Dieng had a GPA of 3.2, which is pretty good for a sportsperson. For his senior year, Dieng transferred to Huntington Prep in West Virginia. At the end of his senior season, Dieng averaged 15.4 points with 12.6 rebounds and 7.2 blocks per game. On seeing his performances, many teams approached Dieng with scholarships.
But Dieng decided to join Louisville by rejecting the other offers. After entering Louisville, Dieng was declared ineligible to play by the NCAA for some reasons. But he appealed the decision and got justice. The NCAA changed the decision and allowed him to play. In his freshman season, he played a total of 29 games and averaged 16 minutes per game. In a match against Michigan State, Dieng equalled the tournament record by making 7 blocks in a single game. He decided to enter the 2013 NBA draft at the end of his senior year.
Dieng was picked by the Utah Jazz as the 21st overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft. After some time, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 14th pick in exchange for Trey Burke. He scored a massive 22 points with 21 rebounds and set a record for the first-ever 20-20 game by a rookie in Timberwolves. Dieng scored at the last minute and helped his team to win the game. Also in 2015, he got a chance to represent Africa at the 2015 NBA Africa exhibition game. At the end of his contract, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for the 2020-21 season.
