Wolves have struck gold by tying down Romain Saiss to a new deal
According to Sky Sports, Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Romain Saiss has put pen to paper on a new deal which should keep him at Molineux until the summer of 2021.
Saiss has become the third player to commit his long-term future to the club this month following new deals for Matt Doherty and club captain Conor Coady. (h/t Sky Sports)
The 28-year-old Moroccan international joined Wolves from French Ligue 1 side Angers back in 2016 and has established himself as one of the mainstays of the team’s midfield.
He was one of the cornerstones of Wolves’ successful season in the Championship last term, making 42 appearances as the club won the title in the second tier and returned to the top-flight following a six-year-long absence. Saiss has racked up 87 appearances for Wolves over the course of two and a half seasons at the club.
Saiss has seen his playtime diminish a little in the Premier League this season, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo preferring the partnership of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho to anchor the midfield.
Belgian international Leander Dendoncker has also been used in recent weeks alongside the Portuguese duo in a midfield five while Saiss filled in admirably at centre-back in the absence of Willy Boly.
The Moroccan has made 13 appearances in the Premier League this term, scoring two goals, including a late equalizer away at Fulham on Boxing Day. There were speculations surrounding his future at Molineux, with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid expressing an interest in the midfielder but Saiss has poured cold water on those talks by extending his stay at the club.
Wolves have enjoyed a wonderful return to the top flight and Nuno Santo’s men are in the race for a Europa League qualification spot.
The decision to sign Jonny Otto Castro permanently in January for a club-record fee was definitely a step in the right direction and they have pulled off another shrewd move by tying the strong and versatile Saiss to a new contract.
Despite having played a bit-part role so far in the first-team this season, Saiss remains an important squad player due to his tough-tackling nature and versatility. Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder and centre-back, Saiss is not only adept at keeping the opposition at bay with his work-rate and ability to cut out the attacks but he is quite capable of chipping in with a few valuable goals and assists as well.

Still only 28, Saiss is expected to continue to perform at the peak of his powers for the foreseeable future and he is certainly capable of taking Wolves to greater heights in the days to come.
