Goals from Mikael Lustig, Jozo Simunovic and Odsonne Edouard secured the victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie that Celtic needed to wrap up their eighth consecutive Scottish title on Saturday.
The 3-0 victory sent the Hoops 12 points clear of their city rivals Rangers, who only have three games remaining, in the Scottish Premiership and ensures they cannot be hauled now. They can complete the triple treble this campaign if they manage to overcome Hearts in the Scottish Cup final.
Celtic started the game in a positive manner, as Tom Rogic saw an early header saved by Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis. But it was Aberdeen that should have taken the lead in the 18th minute when Greg Stewart teed up James Wilson with a cross but from 10 yards the striker volleyed into the ground and the ball clipped the bar and out for goal-kick.
Neil Lennon’s Celtic launched a counter attack out of their own box five minutes later. Kristoffer Ajer smacked the ball upfield to Odsonne Edouard, who burst through on goal but Joe Lewis was off his line quickly and denied him brilliantly.
Aberdeen skipper Scott McKenna made an explosive break down the left flank just after the half-hour mark before picking out Sam Cosgrove with perfectly-weighted through ball. Cosgrave forced a save from Scott Bain but the ball fell kindly to Wilson, who hit the outside of the post from the rebound.
However, Celtic broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when a slight loss of concentration from Stevie May allowed Lustig to sneak in behind him at the back post to head in Callum McGregor’s cross.
Early in the second half, Wilson missed another chance for the hosts when he ballooned his volley over the cross bar. Moments later, Jozo Simunovic leapt perfectly to thump in a powerful header off McGregor’s delivery from the corner.
Bain did make a save from Michael Devlin’s close-range effort with five minutes remaining before Edouard, following a Celtic break, slammed home Rogic’s pass past Lewis for the third goal and to wrap up the title.
