The world No. 7 Coco Gauff will take on the world No. 28, Martina Trevisan, in the round of 16 of the Guadalajara Open on Thursday.
The 18-year-old will be in an exuberant mood after Aryna Sabalenka’s loss in the second round meant that she qualified for the 2022 WTA Finals. She became the youngest player since Maria Sharapova to qualify for the WTA Finals. The American youngster has been quite impressive this season. She has reached three semi-finals but her standout performance came in the French Open when she finished runner-up losing to Iga Swiatek in the final.
Gauff came into the Guadalajara Open after back-to-back quarter-final appearances in the US Open and the San Diego Open. In the round of 32, she went past Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
The experienced campaigner won the Morocco Open and made it to the semi-finals of the French Open. However, her form has dipped considerably since, and except for a quarter-final appearance at the Hungarian Open, there’s nothing much to write home about.
The 28-year-old came into the tournament on the back of an exit in the round of 16 of the San Diego Open. Trevisan began with a convincing win against Nao Hibino in the first round. In the round of 32, the Italian star veteran defeated the doubles No. 1, Katerina Siniakova, in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1. They met each other in the French Open in 2020 and 2022. In their first meeting, Trevisan came back from a set down to win the match 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Gauff managed to exact revenge in this year’s tournament with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 triumph.
Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets.
