The Hamburg European Open is heading towards the conclusion as the semifinals of the women’s event are set to take place on Friday.

Anastasia Potapova

Anastasia Potapova

World no. 63 Anastasia Potapova won the Istanbul Open earlier in the year. This was her first career title. She has reached consecutive semifinals now. Last week she made it to the semifinals in Lausanne before losing to Olga Danilovic in straight sets.

In the ongoing Hamburg European Open, the former junior No. 1 has not dropped a set as of now. She won her first match against Varvara Gracheva. Her next win came against the Argentine Maria Carle. The 21-year-old Russian had an impressive win percentage of 77 on the second serve. In the quarter-final, it seemed as if Potapova’s impressive run would come to a halt as she faced the former world No. 2 Barbora Krejcikova. However, the 2021 French Open winner looked out of sorts against the youngster who won 6-1, 6-3.

Anett Kontaveit

The current world No. 2 from Estonia, came into the tournament as the favorite to go the distance and has shown us glimpses of why she is rated one of the best players at the moment. She began her campaign with a straight-set victory over Irina Bara. Kontaveit followed it up with another win in straight sets against Rebecca Peterson. The 26-year-old was at her dominating best in the quarterfinal match against Andrea Petkovic. Kontaveit won the first set without losing a game and the second set was poised at 2-0 in her favor until the home favorite had to pull out of the match owing to an injury.

Kontaveit will be looking forward to winning her second title in 2022. Her first title came at the St. Petersburg Open when she defeated Maria Sakkari in an intense final.

Head-to-Head

Kontaveit leads the head-to-head 1-0 over Potapova and the former should be able to double her lead unless the youngster pulls off another miraculous performance as she did in the quarterfinal.

Prediction

Anett Kontaveit to win in straight sets.
