Harry Gant: How Did He Become the Oldest NASCAR Driver to Win in History

Harry Gant made NASCAR history on August 16, 1992 at Michigan International Speedway when he won the Champion Spark Plug 400 at 52 years and 219 days old. More than three decades later, nobody has broken his record as the oldest driver to ever win a Cup Series race.

Harry Gant Started at 42, When Most Quit

Gant didn’t win his first Cup Series race until April 1982 at Martinsville Speedway at age 42 years and 105 days old, making him the oldest driver at the time of his first victory. He spent years building houses in North Carolina and racing weekly short tracks before selling his construction business in 1979 to chase his NASCAR dream full time at age 39.

The Taylorsville native endured 10 runner up finishes across 107 starts before finally breaking through. Some losses came by split seconds while others turned into blowouts, earning him the nickname “Hard Luck Harry” that he absolutely hated.

Mr. September, Harry Gant’s Historic Run

Gant’s career peaked in 1991 at age 51 when he won four straight Cup races during September at Darlington, Richmond, Dover, and Martinsville. The winning streak tied the modern era record and earned him the nickname “Mr. September.” He also won two Xfinity Series races that same month, making him the only driver to lead both series in wins during a single season.

His 1992 Michigan victory came on fuel mileage strategy, gambling that he could make it to the finish without another pit stop. The win also marked the final victory for Oldsmobile in Cup competition before Gant switched to Chevrolet in 1993.

Gant holds another age record that still stands today. At 54 years old, he won the pole position at Pocono in 1994 during his final season, making him the oldest pole winner in Cup Series history. He retired after the 1994 season with 18 Cup wins, 21 Xfinity wins, and the 1985 IROC championship.
