Tyron Woodley is a former champion but he seems set to be cut by the UFC soon
Tyron Woodley has not been in the best of form recently and things took a drastic turn today as the former champion was removed from the UFC rankings.
Woodley had lost his last four fights, with Vicente Luque getting the better of him in the previous outing.
The 39-year-old was the UFC Welterweight champion before losing to Kamaru Usman at 19-4-1. He then lost to Gilbert Burns, Colby Covington and Luque, but all of those losses came with questionable performances.
There is no denying that Woodley was a great champion but his performances weren’t great recently. Further, the fight against Luque was the last one on his current UFC contract.
Burns, who fought Usman for the title a few months back and lost, was also surprised by the axing of Woodley from the rankings.
The simple answer, for now, is no. Woodley hasn’t been officially cut but things will change it seems.
This is a regular process by the UFC to first remove someone from the rankings before releasing the star.
They did the same with Alistair Overeem and this could happen to Woodley too. Dana White also spoke about Woodley after the recent Luque fight and didn’t seem too keen about the prospects of the former champion in the future
Woodley might have been poor in his recent outings but there is no doubt he was one of the best during his prime.
The UFC has released several big names recently with Anderson Silva being another former champion getting cut.
Woodley could still fight in another promotion but he has a lot of other projects too. The 39-year-old has his own TV shows, has acted in several movies, including a Bollywood one, and hosts a podcast too.
Woodley has an MMA record of 19 wins, seven losses and one no contest and it will be interesting to see what his next move is.
