House of the Dragon Season 2 is expected to be released in summer 2024.
HBO renewed House of Dragon for a second season after its successful premiere, this time to focus on Targaryen civil war known as Dance of Dragons. Due to WGA and SAG strikes, season two will feature only eight episodes.
House of Dragon, HBO’s original fantasy series, has been renewed for another season! HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys confirmed this news in an interview with Variety and promised us eight episodes to look forward to in 2024.
House of Dragons will take an in-depth look into the history and civil war of House Targaryen, known as The Dance of Dragons. While Game of Thrones takes place in present-day Westeros, House of Dragons allows audiences to explore a different part of our planet with its inhabitants through this timeless series.
House of Dragon’s second season will expand its world as well as introduce new characters. Although Paddy Considine won’t reprise his role of Viserys Targaryen due to his death during season one, Emily Carey and Milly Alcock will appear as younger versions of Lady Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen respectively.
Additionally, Abubakar Salim and Freddie Fox have joined the cast as Gwayne Hightower and Alyn of Hull respectively – two actors known for their performances in Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Raised by Wolves.
As the first season of House of Dragon broke streaming records and garnered critical acclaim, HBO made no secret in renewing it for another run. Set 200 years before Game of Thrones and chronicling the story of Targaryen family members.
This series will continue its exploration of one of the Seven Kingdoms’ most powerful houses and is sure to draw in an avid following. Viewers should expect plenty of action, drama, fire and blood! It is anticipated that time jumps will be reduced as opposed to its first season which spanned over a decade to explore how Rhaenyra and Alicent started their bitter rivalry.
Ryan Condal, co-showrunner of Dragon Age: Origins, announced on March 20, 2023, that all cast members would return for season 2. Additionally, fans would meet five new dragons. Filming of season two will start shortly.
Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen on Game of Thrones, recently confirmed he has received his script for episode four. This news brought relief to fans concerned their favourite cast members would not return – the majority of main cast including Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans Steve Toussaint and Fabien Frankel are expected to return!
House of Dragon was an overwhelming success for HBO, reaching over 10 million viewers per episode and quickly receiving renewal for season 2. Set 172 years prior to Game of Thrones events, House of Dragon follows the story of House Targaryen. House of the Dragon Season 2 is expected to be released in summer 2024.
Filming of House of Dragon’s second season began in April 2023 and is anticipated to conclude sometime between September and November. Post-production will likely require 8-10 months if new dragons are added by VFX department, which reports suggest may happen.
As for the second season, it is likely that most of the cast of the series will remain unchanged; however, new actors could join such as Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower (Olivia Cooke’s brother and Otto’s son). Abubakar Salim will portray Alyn of Hull who serves in Velaryon fleet.
House of Dragon is progressing well despite the WGA writers’ strike, thanks to scripts written prior to it and being shot in the UK where SAG-AFTRA does not strike.
HBO is clearly committed to continuing their groundbreaking show House of Dragons. The premiere surpassed streaming records and ratings expectations with 10 million viewers tuning in across Europe and North America alone! House of Dragons serves as a prequel to Game of Thrones by exploring House Targaryen history.
Season 1 of Game of Thrones chronicled events leading up to and surrounding the Dance of the Dragons civil war in Targaryen. Season 2 will explore its consequences.
Expect more of the relationships established in season one as well as some brand new ones to form. While Alicent and Rhaenyra’s relationship may suffer due to Lucerys death, it could also allow for their fragile connection to be strengthened or repaired entirely – particularly with Otto back as an active character and Rhaenyra’s stepbrother Otto’s potential return, promising even greater chaos!
House of Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has teased that we may meet some new dragons in Season Two of House of Dragon. Additionally, House of Dragon is expected to explore a more mature world than Game of Thrones which may explain its second season renewal.
House of Dragon has not been affected by the writers’ strike that has temporarily shut down Hollywood production, according to Variety. Filming of House of Dragon is currently underway and production should wrap between October and September of this year.
