House of Dragons Season 2 is expected to be released by 2024, as per production reports.
House of Dragons fans were delighted to hear that its cast will return for Season 2. The show made its debut in August 2022 and was the highest-rated original series premiere on HBO.
Production for Season Two began in April 2023 despite WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that interrupted many high-profile projects; production on HOTD continued nonetheless.
Cast
House of Dragon was one of HBO’s most successful premieres in 2022 with its blend of messy politics, massive dragons and blonde wigs that captured millions of fans’ hearts in its debut season.
Producers of “Game of Thrones” appear eager to build upon its success and have announced that season two will consist of eight episodes that focus on dynastic battle for the Iron Throne as well as expand cast size and introduce new characters.
Season two will focus on House Targaryen and their history leading up to and following the Dance of Dragons civil war, as well as on its aftermath as well as their attempts at rebuilding power and consolidating control by their heirs.
Though there have been some changes, most of the original cast will return for season two of Game of Thrones. Emma D’Arcy will reprise her role as named heir Rhaenyra Targaryen while Olivia Cooke takes over Queen Alicent Hightower; Paddy Considine as Ser Harrold Westerling and Matthew Needham will also reprise their respective roles as Ser Harrold Westerling and Lord Larys Strong respectively.
Many fans were worried that production might halt due to simultaneous actor and writer strikes, but co-showrunner Sapochnick has confirmed that scripts for season two have already been written and revised by writers to make them faster-paced.
Plot
House of Dragons’ inaugural season was an enormous success, drawing in nearly 20 million viewers on all platforms. Fans were taken in by its stunning visuals and intricate world-building, captivating viewers with political intrigue and family drama that captured Game of Thrones while creating its own distinct identity. No surprise then that HBO has already greenlit a second season!
Filming for the next season of Game of Thrones has already started and most of its original cast are expected back. Emma D’Arcy will reprise her role as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen while Paddy Considine returns as Lord Lachlan Stackhouse. Additionally, new faces such as Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers from Harrenhal – she becomes a powerful witch allying herself with the Greens; Simon Russell Beale has also been cast as Ser Simon Strong; great-uncle of Matthew Needham’s Lord Larys Strong character played by Matthew Needham (Lord Larys).
Notably, House of Dragon production continued even during the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes due to script completion prior to writers going on strike and filming taking place in the UK, where actors do not need to honor union picket lines.
As for the future of the series, Miguel Sapochnik may voluntarily step aside after Season 2 to focus on other projects within HBO – although he will still receive executive producer credit.
Release date
HBO quickly renewed House of Dragons for a second run following its successful first season. The premiere saw 10 million viewers tune in, making this series one of the highest viewed launches since Game of Thrones itself. Francesca Orsi, EVP of programming for HBO said in her statement she is proud of all who worked to bring it life:
The second season of Game of Thrones will return in summer 2024 with eight episodes, following Rhaenyra Targaryen in her search for more dragonriders outside King’s Landing and Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin – providing for an expanded narrative experience that might rival that of Game of Thrones itself.
House of Dragons Season 2 is expected to be released by 2024, as per production reports.
Filming of House of Dragons’ second season began in April and continues currently. Filming has continued despite the Writers Guild of America writers strike, which forced several high-profile productions to cease filming altogether; House of Dragons managed to continue shooting since all scripts had been completed prior to it happening.
Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Tom Glynn-Carney make up the cast for Season 2. Clare Kilner directs and Ramin Djawadi is composer who also worked on Game of Thrones.
Episodes
House of Dragon has been renewed for another season after its unprecedented debut last month, drawing unprecedented demand in Europe and over 10 million viewers in America – making it HBO’s most watched premiere since 2022. But unlike Game of Thrones which frequently increased episode count over its lifespan, House of Dragon’s sophomore run will feature eight episodes rather than the usual 10. According to Deadline reports this decision was made due to “story,” according to network representatives.
The first season, shot on location in Spain and the UK, chronicles the history of House Targaryen 172 years before Game of Thrones begins. It follows them through their struggles – such as civil war known as Dance of Dragons – before transitioning into more focused character studies that explore individual family units within it. The second season will continue exploring this conflict but with more emphasis placed upon individual families within Targaryen House.
House of Dragon will return for another season this fall with Paddy Considine from Dancing at Lughnasa and Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy returning as well as Steve Toussaint from It’s a Sin and Doctor Who reprising their roles from It’s a Sin/Doctor Who respectively as well as additional actors such as Phoebe Campbell, Bethany Antonia Tom Glynn-Carney Jefferson Hall Dwayne Johnson among others. Director Clare Kilner worked on USA series Colony as well as Hercules film projects helmed this new season of House of Dragon.
