“I was a criminal. I became a revolutionary. And people expected me to commit class suicide as a successful writer and become a noted author, and to me, I didn’t want to go that way. I didn’t want to be the go-to guy when they said, ‘What about gangs?’ Because that’s not what it’s about,” he writes in his book.
Kody was a part of the Eight Tray Gangster Crips (or 83 GC) in 1975, as a young boy. He was made to complete tough tasks to be included into the gang such as beating people up.
Kody and his crew were parts of various shootouts with rival gangs. The wars were pretty bad resulting in a loss of lives of young members. Kody was part of the team that created havoc on one of the rival gangs, The Brims.
He changed his name in prison to Sanyika Shakur and reformed inside through the holy book, Quran. He was released in 1988, after which he got married.
However, Kody also formed a strong friendship with Tupac Shakur, who was killed by the rival gangs – West Coast Crips.
Shakur became a social activist and spread a new sense of wisdom into others, before his shocking death. The post-mortem will reveal more details about his death.
