Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi has recently rolled her sleeves which revealed scars on her arms which led to many curiosities about what happened to her.
Who is Padma Lakshmi?
Padma Parvati Lakshmi is an Indian-born American author, activist, model, and television host. She has hosted the cooking competition program Top Chef on Bravo continuously since season 2 (2006).
She received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality Host in 2009 and 2020 through 2022. She is also the creator, host, and executive producer of the critically acclaimed docuseries Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi which premiered in 2020.
She has published not one, not two but six books: two cookbooks, Easy Exotic and Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet; an encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of Spices & Herbs: An Essential Guide to the Flavors of the World; a memoir, Love, Loss, and What We Ate; a children’s book.
She was born in Madras (now Chennai), India into a Tamil Brahmin family. Her mother Vijaya is a retired oncology nurse. Her parents divorced when she was two years old. The Padma has scars on her arms which she was very self-conscious of but has eventually learned to love them. Let us find out more about her scars.
How did Padma Lakshmi get the scar on her arm?
Padma Lakshmi got the scar during a car accident when she had a shattered arm leaving her with a gash. She also had extensive injuries including a fractured hip, which resulted from her undergoing surgery.
She was eating rice in the car, when she suddenly heard a loud bang, saw the plate fly up into the air, and only noticed the “miraculous blue sky”, has told in a video shared by The Moth.
She has since been left with a seven-inch scar on her right arm following the Malibu-based incident. The freak accident involved Padma flying out of the car on a driveway, which she had initially noticed was busy for a Sunday. It happened in the year 1984.
The Padma was just 14 years old when the car accident happened. When she woke up in a California hospital, she wrote in her memoir that she had a shattered arm, severed right index metacarpal and a fractured left hip.
This is what she had to say,
“After my first surgery, I was left with the scar, thin and straight, on my right arm.”I developed a keloid and the scar transformed into the gnarly caterpillar that today creeps up my right arm.”
She has recently written in her memoir Love, Loss, and What We Ate that while modelling for famed photographer Helmut Newton, she found a whole new level of acceptance for the scar.
“Didn’t they tell you about my scar?” she wrote. “The words barely escaped my mouth. “Yes, yes,” he said, “but why have you erased a part of it? You’ve ruined the beauty of it.” She wrote.
