Roger Federer and John Millman played a sensational match in the third round at the Australian Open 2020. Both players showed tremendous grit and determination as the fans witnessed one of the most memorable matches in the history of the Australian Open.
The former world No. 1 Roger Federer lost the first set before coming back strongly and winning the next two sets. Millman drew level by winning the fourth set as the match went into the decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Australian was only two points away from victory when he led 8-4 in the 10-point tiebreak. However, the six-time Australian Open champion used all his experience to make a stunning comeback. Federer won six consecutive points to win the tiebreak 10-8 and the gruelling match was finally over after four hours and three minutes.
The Swiss legend was all praise for Millman after the match. Oh God, it was tough,” Federer told former World No. 1 Jim Courier in an on-court post-match interview. “Thank God it was a Match Tie-break, otherwise I would have lost this one. Where to start? I think John played a great match… He is a great fighter, a good guy and it came down to the wire at the end.
“A bit of luck maybe goes one way. I had to stay so focused, take the right decision. He was doing all that stuff at the beginning of the Match Tie-break, coming up with the goods and I thought, ‘Okay, I guess I tried.’ I didn’t play too bad after all and I was getting ready to explain myself in the press conference… What a match and John deserves over half of this one.”
The fans at the Rod Laver Arena experienced a memorable thriller. This was Roger Federer’s 100th win at Melbourne Park.
