Formula 1 cars are some of the fastest vehicles in the world but the cost of building such a machine is extremely high.
Millions of dollars are spent in trying to win championships with Mercedes spending over £320m in 2017 to win their title.
In fact, the cost of winning an F1 title has doubled since the days of Brawn when they spent £166m in their only season at the top in 2008.
The costs have increased over the years and there are talks of implementing a cost-cap to ensure that teams do not fall away and file for bankruptcy, something that Force India were close to.
Drivers are paid in the millions to race the quickest machines but the cars also have a lot spent in making them.
The cost of an F1 car has increased from £6,000 in 1970, and now that has increased into millions.
There are several parts of a Formula 1 car and each aspect has to fit in perfectly to the plan.
From the front wing to the rear wing, from the halo to the suspension, everything comes at a cost.
Fuel tanks and steering wheels are also expensive feature in these cars as they cannot be simply taken from road vehicles.
Some parts of an F1 car cost more than others and here is a break-up:
The engine is the most important part of an F1 car and is the costliest component too.
Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda are the current manufacturers and the price of an F1 car’s engine is certainly huge when compared to the other components.
The carbon fibre body of the F1 car is also extremely important. It has to be strong enough to deal with the impact and protect the racers, while also ensuring it is lightweight to ensure the engine works at its best.
The front wing and nose cone provide a lot of downforce to the cars.
The nose cone also needs to be impact safe while the front wing also has a lot of aero for the car to use.
The rear wing also includes the important DRS mechanism that boosts the speed of the F1 car when it tries to overtake.
This has to be sturdy and also plays a role in keeping the car close to the ground.
F1 steering wheels are complex devices that feature a ton of buttons. From changing the mapping of the engine to handling the drinks for the racers, this is another complex device in the car.
The gearbox and transmission need to be sturdy in all F1 cars. The drivers change gears thousands of times during a race and with the cars reaching 300kmph, teams cannot afford to take the cheap route.
There are several other important aspects in an F1 car which increases the cost of building one.
The cooling system and hydraulics are important for cars that reach incredible speeds. The cooling system also protects the engine from overheating.
The value of a full set of tyres varies but has been pegged at around $1500. There are several sets of tyres ranging from dry to full wets, and these are specially made for F1 cars.
The total cost of building a Formula 1 car in 2020 stands at around $15m. However, this could increase a bit for the top teams while it could come down for the smaller ones too.
