The United Kingdom is all set for the coronation of King Charles III. Prince Charles was next in line to the throne and was crowned king after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Post the coronation, King Charles III will take over as the monarch after a 70-year reign of his late mother, the sovereign.
The 74-year-old King Charles III and Camilla, the queen consort, will be crowned in a pared-down ceremony this weekend. The event, which has been planned under the code name of Operation Golden Orb, “will reflect the monarch’s role today and look toward the future, while being rooted in long-standing traditions and pageantry,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
King Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey, a church where 39 coronations have taken place of English and British monarchs. The ceremony of King Charles III coronation will start at 11 am local time and will end at 1 pm local time. One can watch the coronation from anywhere on BBC iPlayer.
All the royals will arrive in procession from Buckingham Palace for the ceremony. Before the coronation, there will be a procession of faith leaders, ecumenical leaders, realms and the choir, followed by the procession of the King and the Queen Consort.
The coronation marks the ascension of a new ruler to the British throne.
The British coronation is a formal, symbolic ceremony recognizing a monarch’s ascension to the throne, during which the monarch will be crowned and presented with various ceremonial and religious objects. It also marks the monarch’s role as the head of the Church of England.
There will also be two further days of coronation festivities: a Coronation Big Lunch and Coronation Concert (in which Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will headline) on Sunday, May 7, and a nationwide volunteering event called The Big Help Out on Monday, May 8.
