Howard Matthew Moses Long is an American sports analyst and former football player. He is a Super Bowl XVIII winner and has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
After graduating from high school, Long attended Villanova University. During his college years, he played for the Wildcats and started every game as a freshman. During his freshman year, he racked up 99 tackles. He ended his college career as a senior with 84 tackles.
Howie began his NFL career in 1981 after being selected by the Oakland Raiders during the NFL Draft. This was the beginning of a 13-year career with the team, during which he wore number 75.
In 1985, he won the George S. Halas Trophy. In 1984, the Raiders won the Super Bowl. By 1986, Long had been voted to the Pro Bowl four consecutive times. During this period, the Raiders also had the number-one defence in the AFC.
He was a veteran player for the Raiders at the time of his retirement, having overseen their transition from Oakland to Los Angeles, and becoming the “last man standing” who had been an original member of the Oakland team.
By the time he retired in 1993, Long was considered one of the all-time players in a “dream” defensive front, along with names like Curley Culp and Lawrence Taylor. Howie earned several awards, including NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year and NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year.
After retiring, Long appeared in several action films. These included “Firestorm,” “Broken Arrow,” “3000 Miles to Graceland,” and “That Thing You Do!” He then started working as an analyst for Fox’s NFL coverage. He is known for hosting a show called “Howie Long’s Tough Guys.
In 1997 he won a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality. In addition, he wrote a book called “Football for Dummies.”
