Huddersfield Town Opinion: Ivan Cavaleiro could help the Terriers secure immediate promotion to the Premier League

According to Examiner Live, Huddersfield Town have been linked with a move for Wolves forward Ivan Cavaleiro in the summer transfer window, as the Terriers start preparing for a long and hard slog in the Championship next season.

Examiner Live understands that Cavaleiro doesn’t have a future at Molineux following a mediocre first season in the Premier League and the club’s ambitious owners are prepared to move him on in order to make way for new signings.

The same source claims that Terriers manager Jan Siewert is expected to prioritise the signing of a new striker this summer, although there has been no price tag quoted for Ivan Cavaleiro.

A youth product of Benfica, Cavaleiro made only 20 first-team appearances for his boyhood club and was a fringe player in their domestic treble-winning side in the 2013-14 season. The Portuguese international had a loan stint at Deportivo La Coruna in the La Liga before moving across the continent to join Monaco back in 2015.

Following a season of mediocre returns in France, Cavaleiro was snapped up by Championship outfit Wolves in the summer of 2016. The 25-year-old made an instant impact in the second-tier of English football in his very first season, registering 5 goals and 5 assists.

However, it was in his second season at Molineux that he rose to the occasion and played a pivotal role in Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign, contributing with 9 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances in the league.

Despite his stellar run of form in the Championship, the 25-year-old has found life tougher is the Premier League and it is no surprise that Wolves are preparing to get him off their books, as Nuno Espirito Santo starts planning for the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

Cavaleiro scored only 5 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions for the Black Country outfit this past season and it is unlikely that Wolves would retain his services for the upcoming season, although he has a contract at Molineux until the summer of 2021.

To put things into perspective, it doesn’t require a rocket scientist to figure out that Huddersfield need to bolster their attack this summer if they are really serious about making it back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The 2-cap Portuguese international has shown in the past that he is capable of making a massive impact in the Championship with goals and assists and his arrival at the John Smith’s Stadium could work wonders for the Terriers next term.

While 5 goals in 29 games can be considered as poor by Wolves’ standards, Cavaleiro’s returns this past season were enough to put him amongst Huddersfield’s most prolific strikers. The Terriers finished rock-bottom of the standings in the Premier League, scoring 22 goals and conceding 76 goals in the process, figures which look ridiculous on paper, to say the least.

Laurent Depoitre is likely to depart following a miserable season in the Premier League, whilst the likes of Steve Mounie, Adama Diakhaby and Collin Quaner shared only 2 goals between them.

The likes of Isaac Mbenza and Elias Kachunga drew a complete blank as well and it is easy to figure out that someone like Cavaleiro, who is capable of playing as a centre-forward and also out wide on either flank, could help the team improve massively in the final third.

January recruit from Charlton Athletic Karlan Grant finished the season as the top-scorer with 4 goals, and while he would be expected to play a big role next term as well, Cavaleiro could add that extra bit of pace, flair and cutting edge to Huddersfield’s attack.

It is pretty clear that the Terriers need the Portuguese international more than he needs them and it should be a no-brainer for them to strike a deal for the 25-year-old this summer.
