Hulk Hogan had an illustrious career in professional wrestling. He was one of the most popular wrestlers of his time and managed to electrify the audience with his presence. Hogan had a plethora of memorable moments throughout his career and is an inspiration to many wrestlers who have stepped through the ropes after him.
Hulk Hogan Early Life
Born in Augusta, Georgia on August 11, 1953, to construction foreman Pietro “Peter” Bollea and homemaker and dance teacher Ruth V. Bollea. Hulk’s father was of Italian descent while his mother was of Scottish and French descent.
At the age of one and a half years, Hogan moved to Port Tampa, Florida with his family. Hulk was into baseball as a youngster. He was a pitcher in Little League Baseball. He was beginning to impress the scouts but an injury ended his career.
At the age of 16, Hogan began watching professional wrestling. He became a fan of Superstar Billy Graham. The latter became Hogan’s inspiration.
Hogan was also fond of music as she played fretless bass guitar for several rock bands based in Florida. He went on to study at Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida. However, Hogan’s love for music and his commitment to it forced him to drop out of South Florida.
Hogan began lifting at Hector’s Gym in the Tampa Bay area. Hogan and two others formed a band called Ruckus in 1976. Many wrestlers came to watch the shows where Ruckus performed. Two brothers Jack and Gerald Brisco were impressed by Hogan’s physique and they asked Hiro Matsuda – the person who trained wrestlers working for Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF) – to train him.
According to Hogan, Mike Graham, the son of CWF promoter Eddie Graham had issues with him since their time together at school. Graham finally agreed to put Hogan in the ring and that was the beginning of something special.
Hulk Hogan Career
The Brisco brothers gave Hulk Hogan wrestling shoes as a gift. Hogan wrestled his first match against Brian Blair in Fort Myers, Florida on August 10, 1977, in CWF. He played a masked character of “The Super Destroyer”.
Hogan left CWF subsequently and opened a gym with Whitey Bridges. Hogan returned to wrestling in 1978 in Louie Tillet’s Alabama territory. He went on to wrestle for Jerry Jarrett’s promotion – Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) in Memphis.
On December 1, 1979, Hogan won his first championship in professional wrestling – the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship (Northern Division) after defeating Bob Roop. After wrestling in Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) for a brief period, Hogan signed for the World Wrestling Federation. He wrestled his first match on November 17 and defeated Harry Valdez in Championship Wrestling.
Hogan began a feud with Andre the Giant at the time and that feud ended momentarily with a match at Shea Stadium in August 1980.
In the latter half of 1980, Hogan began to work for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). He was a one-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion there.
Hogan was one of the greatest stars in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) history. He won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on 6 occasions. During his time in WWF/WWE, Hogan won the world title 6 times and the tag titles 1 time alongside Edge. Hogan also won the Royal Rumble match in consecutive years (1990, 1991).
The Hulkster is also a two-time Hall of Famer. He was inducted in 2005 individually. In 2020, he was inducted as a member of the New World Order. The New World Order was one of the greatest factions in professional wrestling.
Hulk Hogan Acting Career
Hogan’s popularity was remarkable. He ventured into television and movie roles. He starred in movies like Rocky III, No Holds Barred, Mr. Nanny, and Santa with Muscles to name a few.
Hogan also released a music CD, Hulk Rules, as Hulk Hogan and the Wrestling Boot Band. On March 12, 2010, Hogan hosted his own radio show, titled Hogan Uncensored, on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Howard 101.
