Why Tottenham Hotspur must sign Bruno Fernandes at all costs
According to a Daily Mail report, Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes is willing to leave the club, despite only recently signing a four-year contract.
His release clause stands at a whopping £85m and the report further states that Tottenham Hotspur continue to be interested in signing the talented midfielder. Although there has been a managerial change at White Hart Lane – with Jose Mourinho replacing Mauricio Pochettino – the club’s stance on Fernandes remains unchanged.
While an £85m release clause sounds daunting, it goes without saying that the 25-year-old rise in recent years is incredible and he is capable of being a solid addition to any top European club. And if Tottenham are able to stump up the money to acquire his services, they should not think twice about it. After all, not every creative midfielder can boast of scoring 32 goals in one season.
The fact that he ended up scoring more goals than some of the best strikers speaks volumes of his sheer power.
In the ongoing term, he has already notched up 9 goals. And to add another feather to his cap, it must be mentioned that Fernandes also picked up the UEFA Nations League with Portugal. With such a scintillating CV, Tottenham would bag a massive coup if they are able to sign the Sporting Lisbon star.
As far as Spurs are concerned, they endured a forgettable start under former manager Pochettino. They even plummeted to a lowly 14th spot in the standings at one point.
However, since Mourinho’s arrival at the helm of affairs, things do look a tad more positive for the north Londoners. In his first game in charge, the former Manchester United manager guided Tottenham to a win over London rivals West Ham United.
If he manages to wrap up a deal for Fernandes, it would certainly be the icing on the cake for a club that managed to secure a spot in the Champions League final last season.
In the ongoing campaign, it remains to be seen if Mourinho can secure a top-four berth for Tottenham in the league. However, signing a prolific performer like Fernandes would certainly set them on the right path.
