Chelsea’s draw with Brighton gave Tottenham just a little more to play for at St. Mary’s Stadium in their previous game, with the title race a glimmer more open. But Spurs were lacklustre and lost the game 1-0 as a Danny Ings strike ensured 3 points for the Saints.
With Liverpool up next, Mourinho now has an uphill task in closing the gap with Chelsea, who are currently 4th in the league table. To make matters worse, Harry Kane limped off in the Southampton game which might prove to be crucial to Spurs’ form.
Here is how Tottenham could line up against runaway league leaders Liverpool.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Manager: Jose Mourinho
Predicted XI
1. Paulo Gazzaniga (GK)
Hugo Lloris has turned 33 and has been error-prone in recent years. Whenever Gazzaniga has come in, he’s performed well and could well establish himself as Tottenham’s No.1 even when Lloris returns from his elbow injury.
2. Serge Aurier (RB)
Aurier does not have the attacking threat like Walker or Trippier but his crossing has been exceptional this season. Although prone to an odd error, Aurier has established himself as a regular this season.
3. Toby Alderweireld (CB)
The Belgian has been an ever present under Mourinho and his experience will be key against league leaders Liverpool.
4. Jan Vertonghen (CB)
The centre-back has often been deployed at left-back by Mourinho but might be moved to his natural position to cope up with the likes of Salah, Firmino and Mane.
5. Ryan Sessegnon (LB)
The youngster struggled against Southampton and his mistake led to Ings’ goal. But he seems the best bet at that position and a strong game against Liverpool could enhance his reputation.
6. Eric Dier (CM)
Dier plays a similar role to Nemanja Matic. Now, with Ndombele injured, he is the hot favourite to occupy the position in the centre of the park.
7. Moussa Sissoko (CM)
Sissoko has been fantastic under Mourinho with his energetic runs from the midfield. He has been lively and his ball retention skills make him a must in the starting eleven.
8. Christian Eriksen (CAM)
Although his future hangs in the balance, Eriksen has proven why he is rated so highly this season. With limited game-time under Mourinho, the Liverpool game might prove to be the turning point in him reviving his Spurs career.
9. Giovani Lo Celso (RW)
With Son banned following his red card, Spurs have limited options and that could prompt Mourinho to start Lo Celso on the right flank.
10. Dele Alli (LW)
Dele Alli has been a man on a mission under Mourinho and has had a fantastic turnaround in his form this season. He must continue his rich vein of goalscoring form and beat Liverpool.
11. Lucas Moura (ST)
With Kane under an injury cloud, Lucas Moura might get an opportunity to lead the attack against Liverpool. He has played there in the past and performed to perfection.
