Italian No. 2 Camila Giorgi squares off against Estonian veteran Kaia Kanepi in the round of 128 of the 2023 Indian Wells on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old was ousted in the third round of the Australian Open for the 5th time in her career. She played her best tennis at the Merida Open as she went on to win the title. Giorgi defeated the likes of Mayar Sherif, Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, Sloane Stephens, Katerina Siniakova, and Rebecca Peterson to win the title.
Giorgi has failed to build on that win as she has lost 2 out of the last 3 matches she has played. In Indian Wells, Giorgi defeated Arantxa Rus in the first round. However, she couldn’t progress beyond the second round as she crashed out with a loss to 3rd seed Jessica Pegula.
The experienced campaigner has had a difficult season thus far. She comes into the Miami Open on the back of 4 consecutive losses. Kanepi managed to reach the second round in the two tournaments in Adelaide.
Since that win, Kanepi has taken first-round exits in the Australian Open, the Dubai Tennis Championships, and Indian Wells. In Indian Wells, Kanepi lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the round of 128. Last year in Miami, Kanepi made it to the round of 32 where she lost to Ons Jabeur.
Camila Giorgi and Kaia Kanepi have faced each other on only one occasion thus far. The Italian star won a qualifying match against Kanepi in the 2016 Stuttgart Open in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Prediction: Camila Giorgi to win in straight sets.
