Two talented players, Cristina Bucsa and Erika Andreeva square off in the qualifiers of the 2023 Indian Wells on Monday.
The young Spaniard began the season by playing in the Adelaide International 1. She was ousted in the first round of qualifying by Marta Kostyuk. In the Australian Open, Bucsa reached the third round at a major for the first time. She defeated Eva Lys and Bianca Andreescu before losing to Iga Swiatek.
In the Lyon Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships, Bucsa couldn’t make it beyond the first round of qualifying. She lost to Viktoria Kuzmova and Laura Siegemund in the respective tournaments.
The Russian teenager lost her first match of the season in an ITF event in Australia. She was ousted in the third round of qualifying of the Australian Open. In a subsequent ITF event in France, Andreeva was ousted in the round of 16 by Zeynep Sonmez. Andreeva made it to the main draw of the Lyon Open where she lost to Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16. The 18-year-old couldn’t qualify for the main draw in the Merida Open.
Andreeva most recently played in the ATX Open where she made it to the main draw with wins in two qualifying matches. In the round of 32, she defeated Harriet Dart before going down to Anna-Lena Friedsam in the following round.
Cristina Bucsa has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Erika Andreeva. The Spaniard won when she faced Andreeva in the quarterfinals of an ITF event in France in 2022.
Prediction: Erika Andreeva to win in three sets.
