14th seed Frances Tiafoe locks horns with compatriot Marcos Giron in the round of 64 of the 2023 Indian Wells.
The 25-year-old played an important role in the USA winning the inaugural United Cup. Tiafoe went on to play in the Australian Open where he reached the third round. Tiafoe received a first-round bye in Dallas and defeated Mackenzie McDonald in the round of 16. The 2022 US Open semifinalist lost to J.J. Wolf in the quarterfinals.
Tiafoe recently played in the Mexican Open. In the first couple of rounds, he defeated Yoshihito Nishioka and Feliciano Lopez respectively. In the quarterfinals, Tiafoe was outplayed by friend Taylor Fritz.
The world No. 73 has reached three quarterfinals this season. He began with a second-round exit in the Adelaide International 1. His first quarterfinal appearance of the season came in the ASB Classic where he defeated Federico Coria and J.J. Wolf before losing to Cameron Norrie. After a first-round exit in the Australian Open, Giron managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Dallas Open. Giron followed it up with another run to the quarterfinals at the Delray Beach Open.
Before Indian Wells, Giron took part in the Mexican Open. However, his run ended in the first round as he lost to Michael Mmoh. In the first round of Indian Wells, Giron registered a relatively comfortable win against compatriot Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3, 7-5 with a win percentage of 90 on the first serve.
Frances Tiafoe has a slender 2-1 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Marcos Giron. Tiafoe won their most recent encounter in the 2022 US Open in straight sets 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.
