7th seed Maria Sakkari locks horns with 15th seed Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Indian Wells on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old began with a loss in the first set against Shelby Rogers but she managed to come back strongly. Sakkari went on to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. In the round of 32, Sakkari defeated Anhelina Kalinina once again after dropping the first set. She had a win percentage of 71 on the first serve.
Sakkari faced Karolina Pliskova in the round of 16. The Greek star had to fight hard to win the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Sakkari committed 9 double faults in this match and that didn’t make things easier for her. Out of 29 break points, Sakkari could only convert 7.
The 2-time Grand Slam champion began her campaign in Indian Wells with a 6-1, 7-5 win against Elizabeth Mandlik. In the round of 32, Kvitova was bageled in the first set by Jelena Ostapenko. Kvitova came back strongly and bageled Ostapenko in the second set. The Czech veteran won the match 0-6, 6-0, 6-4. She converted 6 out of 7 break points in the match.
In the round of 16, Kvitova managed to beat the in-form Jessica Pegula 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (13-11). Kvitova converted 6 out of 10 break points in this encounter. In her last two matches, Kvitova has committed 19 double faults and would want to bring that number down against Sakkari.
Sakkari has a 4-3 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Kvitova. The Greek star won their previous encounter in the 2022 Indian Wells 6-3, 6-0.
