Top seed Carlos Alcaraz locks horns with 11th seed Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the 2023 Indian Wells on Saturday.
The 19-year-old Alcaraz is yet to drop a set so far in the competition. He picked up a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the round of 64. Alcaraz went on to beat the in-form Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the round of 32. Against Jack Draper in the round of 16, Alcaraz dominated proceedings and had a 6-2, 2-0 lead when the British youngster retired.
The 2022 US Open champion produced another solid display against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals to reach his third semifinal of the year in as many tournaments. Alcaraz defeated the Canadian No. 1 in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 with a win percentage of 81 on the first serve. Auger-Aliassime became the first player to break Alcaraz’s serve in the tournament. It shows how dominant Alcaraz has been in the competition.
The Italian youngster began with an impressive 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win against Richard Gasquet in the round of 64. Sinner followed it up with a gritty 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win against Adrian Mannarino in the round of 32. Stan Wawrinka was Sinner’s opponent in the round of 16. This turned out to be a one-sided affair as Sinner won 6-1, 6-4. He saved 8 break points in the match.
The 21-year-old went on to beat 4th-seeded Taylor Fritz in an intriguing quarter-final clash that ended 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Sinner had a win percentage of 81 on the first serve compared to just 69 for Fritz.
Carlos Alcaraz has a slender 3-2 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Jannik Sinner. The Spaniard defeated Sinner in their most recent encounter in the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
