2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem squares off against French veteran Adrian Mannarino in the round of 128 of the 2023 Indian Wells.
Dominic Thiem
The Austrian star has not had a good start to the season. He couldn’t qualify for the main draw of the Adelaide International 1. He was ousted in the first round of the Australian Open by Andrey Rublev. In the Argentina Open, Thiem picked up his first win of the season when he defeated Alex Molcan in the first round. Thiem lost to Juan Pablo Varillas in the round of 16.
Thiem went on to play in the Rio Open where he lost to Thiago Monteiro in the first round. The 29-year-old suffered another first-round exit in the Chile Open last week. Thiem will hope to have a deep run in Indian Wells. Playing more matches could help him get back to form.
Adrian Mannarino
The 34-year-old played in the United Cup where he had a win against Federico Coria and a loss against Borna Gojo. In the ASB Classic, Mannarino crashed out in the first round. He defeated John Isner in the first round of the Australian Open but lost to Alex de Minaur in the following round. After this, Mannarino reached back-to-back quarterfinals in the Dallas Open and the Delray Beach Open. In the Challenger event in Monterrey, Mannarino entered as the top seed but suffered a shock loss in the first round to Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Mannarino played in the Mexican Open where Elias Ymer of Sweden defeated him 5-7, 7-3, 6-4. Last year at the Indian Wells, Mannarino lost to Brandon Nakashima in the round of 128. The Frenchman would love to have a better result this year.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
Dominic Thiem has a commendable 8-1 lead in the head-to-head scoreline. Adrian Mannarino’s solitary win came in their most recent encounter at the 2021 Mallorca Open when Thiem retired while leading 5-2 in the first set.
Prediction: Dominic Thiem to win in three sets.
