14th seed Frances Tiafoe takes on Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo in the round of 16 of the 2023 Indian Wells on Tuesday.
After reaching consecutive quarterfinals in the Dallas Open and the Mexican Open, Tiafoe has stormed into the round of 16 in Indian Wells with a couple of comfortable wins.
Tiafoe began with a professional performance against compatriot Marcos Giron in the round of 64. The 25-year-old Tiafoe won the match 6-2, 6-2. He had a win percentage of 85 on the first serve. In the round of 32, Tiafoe outplayed Jason Kubler, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Tiafoe smashed 9 aces and converted 3 out of 3 break points. His serve is yet to be broken in the tournament.
The 25-year-old has not dropped a set thus far in the main draw of the Indian Wells. He reached the main draw with two hard-fought wins against Christopher O’Connell and Zachary Svajda. In the round of 128, Tabilo got the better of Maximilian Marterer in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The Chilean star followed it up with a great win against 32nd seed Maxime Cressy. The thrilling tie ended 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (15-13) in favor of Tabilo. Cressy smashed 28 aces but also gave 18 points away on double faults. Tabilo might have only hit 10 aces but he had only one double fault beside his name.
In the round of 32, Tabilo beat Jordan Thompson 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Tabilo had a win percentage of 82 on the first serve and converted 2 out of 2 break points to book his ticket to the round of 16.
Frances Tiafoe leads the head-to-head scoreline 2-0. The last time they faced each other, Tiafoe won 6-4, 6-2 in the 2nd round of the Newport Beach Challenger in 2020.
