The southpaw came into the tournament on the back of a 3-match losing streak. Mannarino began his campaign in Indian Wells against Dominic Thiem. The Austrian player won the first set but Mannarino bounced back strongly to take the next two sets to complete a fine win. The match ended 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in favor of Mannarino. He converted 4 out of 6 break points in the encounter.

Mannarino managed to take confidence from this win and produced a solid performance in the round of 64 to beat 19th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Mannarino won the match 6-4, 6-4, converting 4 out of 8 break points.
