3rd seed Jessica Pegula locks horns with 15th seed Petra Kvitova in the round of 16 of the 2023 Indian Wells on Tuesday.
The American tennis pro has continued his good run of form in Indian Wells as she has registered two come-from-behind wins. In the round of 64, Pegula ousted Merida Open champion Camila Giorgi after dropping the first set. The match ended 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
In the round of 32, the world No. 3 defeated 26th seed Anastasia Potapova, once again after losing the first set. Pegula won the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. She was helped by the 9 double faults committed by her Russian opponent in the riveting clash that ended in 2 hours and 17 minutes.
The 33-year-old began her campaign in Indian Wells with a comfortable win in the first set against Elizabeth Mandlik. The second straight wasn’t as straightforward but Kvitova used her experience to edge past the American youngster. Kvitova won 6-1, 7-5 with a win percentage of 86 on the first serve.
In the round of 32, Kvitova was bageled by Jelena Ostapenko in the first set. However, she came back superbly in the second set and dished out a bagel to the former French Open champion. In the end, Kvitova won the match 0-6, 6-0, 6-4. She committed 11 double faults but that didn’t come back to haunt her. On the brighter side, she converted 6 out of 7 break points to fix a date with Pegula in the round of 16.
Petra Kvitova leads the head-to-head scoreline 3-1. Pegula’s solitary win against the Czech veteran came in their most recent meeting in the 2022 US Open. Pegula won the match 6-3, 6-2.
