World No. 51 Marc-Andrea Huesler takes on world No. 120 Pedro Martinez in the round of 128 of the 2023 Indian Wells on Thursday.
The Swiss star who won his first ATP singles title last year in the Sofia Open has struggled for form this season. He won a couple of matches in the United Cup but has not been able to win too many matches since then. In Adelaide International 2, he defeated Arthur Rinderknech in the first round before losing to 3rd seed Karen Khachanov in the second round. In the Australian Open, he crashed out in the first round following a loss to John Millman. Huesler exited in the second round in Montpellier as he lost to top seed Holger Rune.
Since that loss, Huesler has played in the ATP Rotterdam Open, the Open 13, and the Dubai Tennis Championships and faced defeats in the first rounds of all three.
The 25-year-old began the season with a run to the quarterfinals of the Maharashtra Open. He lost to 8th seed Aslan Karatsev. In the Australian Open, he was outplayed by 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the first round. Martinez suffered consecutive first-round exits in the Cordoba Open and the Argentina Open. In Rio, he defeated Cristian Garin in the first round before losing to Nicolas Jarry in the second round.
Prior to Indian Wells, Martinez took part in the Chile Open. He couldn’t go beyond the first round as he was comprehensively beaten by Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Pedro Martinez.
Prediction: Marc-Andrea Huesler to win in straight sets.
