4th seed Taylor Fritz locks horns with 30th seed Sebastian Baez in the round of 32 of the 2023 Indian Wells on Monday.
The American tennis pro has been in fine form this season. He bagged his first title of the season at the Delray Beach Open. Prior to Indian Wells, Fritz took part in the Mexican Open where he was ousted by Tommy Paul in the semifinals.
After receiving a first-round bye, Fritz met compatriot Ben Shelton in the round of 64 in Indian Wells. The 20-year-old shocked Fritz in the first set but the experienced campaigner showed why he is one of the best players on the ATP circuit as he secured a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. Fritz had a win percentage of 81 on the first serve and converted 2 out of 4 break points in the encounter.
The Argentine youngster has also been in fine form this season after starting with 3 consecutive losses. In the finals in Cordoba, he won the title by beating Federico Coria. Prior to Indian Wells, Baez reached the semis in Chile where he lost to Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Baez began his campaign in Indian Wells in the round of 64. He faced Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata. Baez dominated the match and won 6-3, 6-1. He had a win percentage of 77 on the first serve and converted 5 out of 8 break points.
Taylor Fritz leads the head-to-head scoreline 1-0. He outplayed Baez in their only previous encounter in the 2022 Western & Southern Open, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
