Brazilian No. 1 Thiago Monteiro takes on Argentina’s Guido Pella in the round of 128 of the 2023 Indian Wells on Thursday.
It hasn’t been a great season thus far for Monteiro. He played in the United Cup, suffering losses against Casper Ruud and Matteo Berrettini. In the ASB Classic, he progressed from the qualifiers but was defeated in the first round of the main draw. In the Australian Open, the Brazilian No. 1 crashed out in the first round. He endured similar fates in the Cordoba Open and the Argentina Open, losing to Federico Coria and Pedro Cachin respectively. In the Rio Open, he ended his losing streak by defeating Dominic Thiem in the first round. Monteiro, however, couldn’t progress further as he lost to 2nd seed Cameron Norrie.
Monteiro’s best result came in his most recent campaign – the Chile Open. He defeated Alber Ramos-Vinolas and Marco Cecchinato to reach the quarterfinals where he lost to Jaume Munar.
The 32-year-old played in the Australian Open to start the season. He couldn’t go beyond the first round as he lost to Francisco Cerundolo. In Cordoba, Pella registered a comfortable win against Andrea Vavassori before losing to Hugo Dellien in the second round.
Pella recently played in the Argentina Open. His journey ended in the first round itself as he lost 6-4, 7-5 to Spaniard Jaume Munar. This is going to be his first match in almost a month.
Thiago Monteiro has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline. He defeated Pella 5-7, 7-4, 7-6 in the 2020 Rio Open.
Prediction: Thiago Monteiro to win in straight sets.
