A confident Wu Yibing takes on another in-form player, Jaume Munar, in the round of 128 of the 2023 Indian Wells.
The Chinese sensation has had a memorable season thus far. He began with a disappointing loss to Alexei Popyrin in the second round of qualifying at the Adelaide International 1. In the Australian Open, Yibing lost to Corentin Moutet in the first round. Yibing went on to play in a Challenger event in Cleveland and finished runner-up.
The 23-year-old carried the good form into the Dallas Open and went on to win his first ATP title. He became the first Chinese man to win an ATP title. He defeated the experienced John Isner in the final. Yibing will be playing his first match since winning the final in Dallas.
The 25-year-old did not have a great start to the season. He lost to eventual champion Tallon Griekspoor in the Maharashtra Open. In the ASB Classic, he was ousted by Laslo Djere in the first round. The wait for his first win of the season continued as Munar lost to Dalibor Svrcina in the first round of the Australian Open. Munar picked up a win against Guido Pella in the Argentina Open but lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the second round. Things didn’t fall in place in Rio as Munar lost to compatriot Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round.
The rub of the green finally went Munar’s way as he reached the semifinals of the Chile Open. He lost to Nicolas Jarry after bagging the first set.
This will be the first meeting between the two players and therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Wu Yibing to win in three sets.
