FIFA World Cups are usually a fun-filled carnival that comes as a treat for every football fan around the world. But it’s not just the fans who wait eagerly for the World Cup; it’s the top clubs in Europe that hawk every rising star in the prestigious competition.
It looks like Tottenham Hotspur have found their next transfer target because a recent report by The Mirror has claimed that they are keeping tabs on young Mexican star Hirving Lozano.
Lozano is a 23-year-old attacker who currently plays for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. Lozano started his career with Mexican side Pachuca and helped the team win the 2016/17 CONCACAF Champions League. But after scoring 43 goals in 149 games, the youngster was bought by PSV.
He made his debut for the Mexican national team in February 2016 and went on to play both the Confederations Cup and the World Cup for El Tri. He had a great World Cup campaign and it was his sensational performance against defending champions Germany that propelled him to stardom overnight.
When he arrived at PSV last season, there weren’t huge expectations from him as it was his first season in a top European league. But he took the Eredivisie by storm and went on to score 17 goals and assisted 8 more in just 29 starts.
These goals and assists were enough to not just help PSV win the league title but also placed him on the radar of top European clubs. He has continued his magnificent form in this season as well, having registered 5 goals and 1 assist in 7 league matches.
A failed summer transfer window is having its repercussions for Spurs right now. The club are on the brink of a Champions League group exit and the lack of depth has only worsened their situation. Injuries to the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have things quite difficult for the north London outfit.
If Spurs do rope in Lozano in January, he could boost the morale of the entire squad. He is a quick player who is capable of playing on either wing and is more than just a traditional winger who whips in a cross for the striker to finish. Being two-footed, he has the ability to either cut in and shoot or go out and deliver a delightful cross into the box.
Moving to Tottenham would be a great move for the player as well. Joining a top club in England will give him the perfect stage to show his quality in front of the entire world.
Under Pochettino, Tottenham are a great team but year after year, they are reduced to applying pressure on the ultimate title winners. If Daniel Levy wishes to see Tottenham Hotspur win a trophy, he must invest in an exciting young player like Hirving Lozano.
