Black Lightning is an action-packed superhero series on The CW that stars Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning and China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce/Lightning, alongside James Remar as Peter Gambi and Jordan Calloway as Khalil Payne/Painkiller.
Tragically, The CW announced today that season 4 will mark its final broadcast, and does not plan on renewing either series (Painkiller or True Blood).

The CW’s decision to cancel black lightning season five came as a shock to fans hoping that they would see another run. Although they cited declining ratings as their primary rationale, it may simply have been too demanding of a schedule on both cast and crew members; managing shooting schedules, complex stories and action sequences requires constant juggling between shooting schedules and action scenes can easily lead to exhaustion.
The fourth season of the popular superhero drama Black Lightning ended with Jefferson Pierce recovering his powers after being buried alive by Tobias Whale, before retiring as a hero and handing them off to Grace Choi (Thunder) and his daughters for the protection of the city. However, show creator Salim Akil revealed his intention to return with a spinoff about Khalil Payne (Painkiller).

Cress Williams portrays Jefferson Pierce, better known as Black Lightning. He fights against discrimination and prejudice – with Tobias Whale vying to take away his powers as Tobias wants revenge against Jefferson Pierce for taking them.
The fourth season of this popular show ended with some major cliffhangers. Episode 22 featured a death, marriage announcement, and goodbyes to major characters; additionally it marked Cress Williams’ final episode before leaving after four seasons as part of her departure plan.

Black Lightning, an action-packed superhero TV show created and broadcast by The CW, has proven immensely popular with viewers since its premiere. Ratings have soared and fans remain committed. So the question arises as to whether or not there will be another season.
Salim Akil has not confirmed whether or not Season 5 will be produced, and doesn’t know whether The CW will cancel it; however, he remains hopeful they may find another home for it.
Black Lightning’s fourth season sees Jefferson Pierce and his daughters Jennifer and Anissa work to liberate their hometown from gangs and corrupt government, with help from Jennifer’s sister Anissa. While Tobias Whale is among his targets, ultimately Jefferson ends up killing him off as well.
Akil has stated his wish to explore black community trauma and examine how superheroes could provide relief, while also seeing how families would cope with such an experience. Unfortunately, however, it appears as if he will no longer get this opportunity.
The CW’s decision to cancel The Flash was shocking for many fans, who speculated it had something to do with low ratings or viewership numbers; but, more likely than not, its cancellation may have been dictated by budget restrictions and increased competition with other superhero shows on The CW.
Black Lightning has won audiences’ hearts through its electrifying action and compelling storytelling, but its fate remains unclear. Although its fourth season was intended to be its last run, there have been reports that it may return for another five year installment.
Fans were left devastated when The CW decided to cancel Black Lightning, yet its creators haven’t given up hope just yet. They are currently working on a Painkiller spinoff and seem confident there could be plans for a fifth season.
However, it appears likely that The CW won’t air Season 5. Despite booming ratings and strong fan support for the show, The network has decided not to continue airing it.

Furthermore, his family life provides plenty of drama as the show explores themes related to family and identity.

Following this exciting battle, he retired as a hero, leaving Grace Choi and his daughters to carry on his legacy.
