Fans are wondering if Super Bowl LV champion Rob Gronkowski is still under contract with WWE
WWE fans would not be forgetting Rob Gronkowski’s name in a hurry. He left the promotion in June 2020 to return to the NFL, and that decision paid off handsomely for him this year.
The All-Pro tight end won the 4th Super Bowl ring of his career with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Alongside Tom Brady, Gronkowski led the Bucs to their 2nd ever Super Bowl title as they trumped Kansas Chiefs 31-9 at Super Bowl LV.
This only became possible after he returned to American football last year. Earlier, he took a year-long hiatus from the sport as he announced his retirement in 2019. ‘Gronk’ mentioned that the number of injuries he encountered in NFL took a toll on his mental health.
He made the most of his year off, and most prominently, he featured regularly for a while on WWE. During this time, he was offered a contract by WWE for a few matches.
Gronk was appearing on the show regularly and even won a title during his time there. However, WWE announced in June 2020 that they had to let the tight end leave with immediate effect. This was due to him making a return to NFL.
The 31-year-old was traded to the Pewter Pirates from the New England Patriots, supposedly on the behest of former teammate Tom Brady. This essentially means that Gronkowski is not under a WWE contract anymore.
But, he was during his spell at the promotion. Being released from the contract also meant that he could make an appearance on other wrestling promotions for a set amount of time. That, however, would probably not be a problem, considering he is back playing football now.
Rob Gronkowski first appeared on WWE at Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 33. During his cameo appearance, he eliminated Jinder Mahal to help his friend Mojo Rawley win the event.
He was then appointed by WWE to host WrestleMania 36, which was held over two days in April 2020. On the second day, April 5th, he won the WWE 24/7 championship, and went on the longest run with the belt, until losing to R-Truth on 1st June 2020.
The next day, he was released by the promotion. And from thereon, Gronkowski went on to have a mammoth season, all the way until lifting the trophy at Super Bowl LV last weekend.
He even won the Slammy Award in 2020 for ‘Celebrity of the Year’. The 31-year-old is at the pinnacle of the sport at the moment and it seems unlikely that he would retire for the second time just to make a return to WWE.
However, cameo appearances could always be a possibility in the future. After all, this gesture from Triple H shows that the promotion still shares a warm relationship with the former 24/7 champion.
