We take a look at the MMA landscape in Hawaii and its first ever UFC gym
Some of the biggest stars in the sport of MMA emerged from one of the most unlikely places on the face of the earth, Hawaii. From the ‘Prodigy’ BJ Penn, to the ‘Blessed’ express in Max Holloway, there’s something in the waters here that connects the spirits of past and present warriors.
A land known for glow pulses of lava, searing heat clashes with water cold enough to freeze, powerful waves that sculpt the shoreline – produced some of the most fearsome warriors in the history of this sport.
Hawaiian fighters are a combination of American swagger and technique, mixed with Mexican fighting spirit and toughness. Popular for the welcoming ‘Aloha’ spirit they can switch up and reach out for their warrior spirit within, and never shy away from a fist-fight.
The UFC Gym in Hawaii is located at four prime locations on the island. The gyms are located in Kailua, Honolulu, Waikele and Mililani.
The rapidly expanding fitness franchise that creates training programs for all levels, inspired by the training regimens of world-class UFC athletes has opened at more than 150 locations throughout the globe.
The gym at Kailua is the newest addition the franchise, owing to the growing response and interest for the sport . UFC had announced their plan back in 2011 when they partnered with BJ Penn to develop state of the art facilities in Hawaii- integrating MMA, innovative fitness training, nutrition and youth programs.
We can expect fresher breed of MMA talent to emerge from the fighting grounds of Hawaii, with developing interest and infrastructure.
