Stories about content creators experiencing burnout are becoming all too common on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, with recent examples like Tfue showcasing how much the grind of content creation can wear a person down. While many view content creation as a fun profession, it’s true that many platforms require content creators to be consistent, and sometimes put in work outside of just filming videos.
Burnout happens to everyone no matter what your profession is and how successful you are. Is this also what happened to English content creator, Tom Scott, and why he is quitting YouTube? Although content creation can be a fun career, it can also take a toll on one’s mental and physical health. Tom Scott, one of the biggest YouTubers (6.31 million subscribers) in the UK, has chosen to move away from his main channel content, which he consistently uploaded almost every week. For those not acquainted with Tom, the content on his main channel usually revolves around topics such as data science, science experiments, history, and cultural explorations. Yesterday, on his 10-year anniversary as a YouTuber, Tom disclosed that he intends to take a step back from his YouTube journey and explore new endeavors. In a video titled “After ten years, it’s time to stop making videos,” he said: “It’s time to move on.”
Scott is an English web developer who has gained popularity for self-titled his YouTube channel. He started vlogging in 2010 with various series, such as Language Files, The Basics, Amazing Places, and Things You Might Not Know. He further grew his channel to include other educational topics like history, linguistics, science, and many more. To date, Scott has a total of five YouTube channels with an amassed 7.61 million subscribers and 1.82 billion views. He has collaborated with other YouTubers, along with his four-person comedy troupe called The Technical Difficulties.
Back in June 30, 2023, Tom Scott released a video where he explained his decision to quit YouTube.
In the two-minute video, he said: “Six months from now, this channel stops.” He also explained that he regularly posts an update to his channel every week. And over a span of 10 years, that can take a toll on someone. And true enough, on January 1, 2024, Tom Scott quit YouTube.
In the YouTube video, Tom Scott shared that this is an indefinite leave and that “It’s probably not goodbye forever, but this channel will stop. At least, for a while.” While the goodbye video was released in June 2023, Scott shared that he already has scheduled 26 other videos to come out for the rest of the year. But now that it’s already January 2024, the YouTuber has kept his word and will go on “a vacation” for an unknown period.
Having been creating videos for a decade, Tom’s YouTube journey, particularly on his main channel, seems to be reaching its conclusion.
Despite this, he has been among the most steadfast YouTubers, consistently uploading content every week.In an eight-minute-long video, the YouTuber shared his desire to prioritize his family and expressed feeling overwhelmed by the oversaturation of work, leading him to contemplate taking a break:
“This project has worked and it’s time to move on. I’m still gonna be looking at interesting things to film here, probably be videos here from time to time, I really do love doing this. There is a part of my brain that desperately doesn’t want this to end. So if you have an idea for a future video, you can still tell me about it, one day, I might make it.” He added: “But right now, I need to spend time with people I hold dear. I need there to be things in my life that are not work and it’s been years since that’s been true.”
