Early Career
Bonga started playing streetball in Neuwied when he was seven years old, and he joined the neighbourhood club two years later.
As a Post SV Koblenz product, Bonga played his first senior basketball minutes for SG Lützel-Post Koblenz in the Regionalliga, Germany’s fifth-tier level 2 competition, during the 2014–15 season.
He played in 24 games for the Regionalliga in 2015–16, averaging 5.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2 assists per game after leading the team to the championship and gaining promotion to the fourth division. He also played for Eintracht Frankfurt’s under-19 team in the NBBL, Germany’s highest junior league.
Professional Career
In June 2016, Skyliners Frankfurt of the Basketball Bundesliga and Bonga agreed to a four-year contract. In the same month, he received an invitation to the NBA Top 100 camp in Charlottesville, Virginia. The 2016 Basketball without Borders Camp Europe will be held in Helsinki in September 2016, and Bonga was chosen as one of the top European prospects to attend.
On September 23, 2016, in the Skyliners’ 84-55 loss to Brose Bamberg, Bonga made his Bundesliga debut for the team at 16.
Bonga entered the 2018 NBA draft as one of 54 international players who were eligible to do so on May 1, 2017 after signing with agents Jason Ranne and Thad Foucher.
On June 21, 2018 the Philadelphia 76ers selected Bonga from the Los Angeles Lakers with the 39th overall choice in the 2018 NBA Draft. In a deal involving the 76ers sending Bonga to the Lakers in return for a 2019 second-round selection and monetary considerations, the Lakers officially gained him on July 6. He agreed to a rookie scale contract with the Lakers after being gained.
On December 7, 2018, he played his first minute and seven seconds of NBA action against the San Antonio Spurs.
Bonga was traded to the Washington Wizards in a three-team trade on July 5, 2019. In his first season with the Wizards, he averaged 5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game (2019-20).
Bonga signed as a free agent with the Toronto Raptors on August 12, 2021. He appeared in 15 regular-season games and one playoff game but he never broke through.

Bonga was born in the German town of Neuwied to parents from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. His father moved to Germany in the early 1990s intending to move to Canada, but stayed and settled in Frankfurt and then Koblenz. Tarsis, Bonga’s older brother, plays association football for VfL Bochum, and Joshua, his younger brother, also plays basketball.
