Liverpool Opinion: Why the Reds should make a move for Matthias Ginter?
According to a report from Calciomercato, Liverpool are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter.
The German, 25, moved to Borussia Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 and has been a regular in the side since, scoring five goals in the Bundesliga in his first season at Borussia Park. He has excelled this season as well and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Liverpool vying for his signature this summer.
It was Jurgen Klopp who signed Matthias Ginter for Dortmund from Freiburg back in 2014. Perhaps, that could be the reason why Klopp wants to reunite with the German defender at Anfield as the Reds look to end their 29-year title drought this season.
Liverpool hold a two-point lead over the top of the table, although they have played a game more than second-placed Manchester City. The Reds have enjoyed the best defensive record in this Premier League campaign, thanks largely to Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk’s form under Jurgen Klopp has been crucial since the start of the league campaign. The big Dutchman is arguably the best defender in the world right now but Klopp is possibly searching for a reliable partner at central defence for his defensive stalwart.
Joe Gomez started alongside Van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool defence but he has been out of action since December with a broken ankle. Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Fabinho have all partnered Van Dijk this season but none of them have been consistent
Ginter would fit the bill perfectly at Anfield, having already worked with Klopp at former club Dortmund. Ginter has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable centre-backs in the last couple of years.
Standing at 6ft. 2in tall, the German is an aerially dominant centre-half but and has the pace and the intelligence on the pitch to make recovery tackles. One of the biggest assets in his game is his positional awareness which allows him to anticipate danger and clear it before it develops.

The 25-year-old’s ability to intercept balls and make tackles to break attacks will surely suit Klopp’s style of play, whilst his versatility to play at right-back and as a defensive midfielder would add more value to his name. Not to forget, Ginter’s strength, pace and power will help him adjust to the physicality of the Premier League without much struggle.
Verdict
If Liverpool are to become a dominant force in Europe, they’ll need a partner for Van Dijk in central defence. Ginter certainly could be that player as he has all the qualities needed to thrive under Klopp.
Hence, the Reds shouldn’t think twice in splashing the cash to sign the World Cup winner from Gladbach.
