American sensation Sofia Kenin won her first Grand Slam by defeating Garbine Muguruza in the 2020 Australian Open

Sofia Kenin got the better of Garbine Muguruza to win her first Grand Slam in the Australian Open, and it was a terrific performance.

The 21-year-old picked up the 2020 Australian Open and needed three sets to get the win. The 14th seed also defeated home favourite, Ash Barty, en-route to the final and also eliminated prodigy Coco Gauff.

Kenin was a prodigy herself and many questions were asked as she celebrated her triumph.

One reporter asked the youngster is she could be the one who dominates the game by winning multiple Slams, and Kenin wanted more trophies after this Australian Open:

“I would love to. I mean, it would be amazing but right now, I still can’t believe what just happened, so I needed to somehow come down and just let it all sink in.

“Hopefully, I can just keep going and build up on everything that I have done in the past two weeks, and just move forward.”

Nerves playing a part

Kenin’s best performance in a Grand Slam was reaching the fourth round, which took place in the 2019 French Open.

However, she won a few titles last year, and that might have helped her push on in the third set.

The American also told reporters that she was nervous throughout the game, but tried to keep pushing to get the better of Muguruza.

The youngster also revealed an interesting bit of information that her mother doesn’t watch any of the matches.

Kenin’s mother is a little superstitious and the new champion had to ring up to tell her family about her success.
