Former World No.1 Naomi Osaka tweeted that it would be very special to reach the finals of the Federation Cup (Fed Cup) ahead of her side Japan’s qualifying matches against Spain on Friday.
Osaka, who last played for Japan in 2018, will be eager to prove a point when both sides meet to secure a place for themselves in the upcoming finals which will be held in Budapest, Hungary this coming April.
Osaka’s excitement to play for the national side was very evident after she posted a statement on Twitter with a caption: “Back with the squad for the first time since 2018”.
In the statement she put up, the current World No.10 opens up about her excitement to feature for a group, which according to her is a rarity in tennis:
“It would be very special to reach the finals. I love playing in the group atmosphere which is really rare for tennis, so I’m super excited”.
Meanwhile, two-time Roland Garros quarterfinalist, Spain’s Carla Suárez Navarro will be playing the final year of her career since turning professional back in 2003.
Currently ranked 55, the 31-year old is presently the top-ranked player for the five-time champions, who will face the Japanese in an outdoor clay court at Cartagena.
Joining Navarro in the Spanish side would be Sara Sorribes Tormo, Aliona Bolsova, Lara Arruabarrena, and Georgina Garcia Perez respectively.
The Japanese, on the other hand, have Misaki Doi, Kurumi Nara, Ena Shibahara, and Shuko Aoyama besides the 2-time Grand Slam winner Osaka.
