James Key is a British Formula One Engineer who has been associated with F1 for close to three decades. He has worked for multiple F1 teams over the years and recently joined Alfa Romeo as the Technical Director. Key has worked in various roles for F1 teams like Jordan Grand Prix, Force India, Sauber, Toro Rosso, McLaren and Alfa Romeo during his illustrious professional career till date.
Key began his F1 career with Jordan in 1998 and soon after became the race engineer for Japanese F1 driver Takuma Sato. He got his major breakthrough in 2010 when he joined Sauber as Technical Director and had a successful two-year spell with the team. From 2012-2019, Key held the role of Technical Director at Toro Rosso and subsequently moved to McLaren, where he worked for four years until 2023.
Key was sacked by McLaren in March this year and has now been roped in as a Technical Director by Alfa Romeo. He split with McLaren after the team missed their development targets over the winter for their 2023 car. This is a sort of homecoming for Key as he was the Deputy technical director in the same team for two years from 2010 to 2012. Key will also be reunited with Andrea Seidl, the CEO of Alfa Romeo and the pair has worked for a number of years together in the past.
