In college, he played basketball for the Texas Longhorns. The Brooklyn Nets in the 2017 NBA Draft selected Allen 22nd overall. In January 2021, the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired him as part of the historic four-team James Harden trade. After being traded for Harden a year earlier, Allen was selected for his first NBA All-Star Game in February 2022 as a Harden injury replacement.
