The Philadelphia 76ers acquired him shortly after in exchange for a 1993 first-round draft pick.
Williams only featured for two seasons in Philly before getting traded to Brooklyn. He made a meagre 12 starts in his first three seasons before finally becoming a starter in 1996. He found his best gear in the next campaign, leading the league in offensive rebounds and offensive rebound percentage. He also was top five in total rebounds collected, rebounds per game and offensive rating.
Williams was breaking out as a NBA star, earning his spot in the 1998 NBA All-Star team. That was the peak of his career as a year later he broke his leg in a collision with his teammate. The former NBA centre needed metal plates and five screws inserted to his leg through surgery. He could no longer play professionally and called time on his career in 2000. He did try to come out of retirement, playing for the Idaho Stampede in the Continental Basketball Association in 2005 but it was not meant to be.

He escaped criminal charges but was sentenced to prison after shooting and killing Costas “Gus” Christofi, his limousine driver in 2002. In a bizarre incident in his New Jersey residence, he ended up in court with a prison sentence of five years for reckless manslaughter.
Williams pled guilty in 2010 after several pushbacks and was allowed parole after 18 months. He was also moved to Riker’s Island in 2011 for a DWI incident for which he served 8 months and got out.
