Jennie Gow initially developed a severe cough, unrelated to Covid-19. Her husband, Jamie Coley, later found her collapsed in the bathroom. He attempted to communicate with her but was unsuccessful. Dr. Thomas Pain, a consultant at Frimley Park Hospital, later explained that she suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot originating from the carotid artery in her neck.
The clot resulted from a tear in the blood vessel due to her persistent cough and a viral infection she had at the time. She was quickly transported to St George’s Hospital in London for the clot’s removal to prevent further damage. Despite the successful procedure, the clot had already inflicted damage on the part of her brain responsible for speech.
It was one of the stroke nurses who eventually encouraged her to speak by provoking her anger. Following that breakthrough, she underwent therapy to aid her recovery. As of July 2023, she has made a complete recovery and has returned to her work.
