Jermell Charlo Early career 

The twins Jermell and Jermall hail from Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas, with Jermell being the younger sibling by a mere minute. Their journey in the sport of boxing began as they followed in their father’s footsteps, who was a former boxer, and entered the gym. 

Jermell, after two years of honing his skills, rose to prominence in the amateur boxing realm, securing a bronze medal at the 2005 Junior Olympics at the tender age of fifteen. With a formidable record of 56 victories and 8 defeats, Jermell concluded his amateur career with distinction.

Jermell Charlo Professional career 

He began his professional career on December 8, 2007, at the young age of 17, defeating Corey Sommerville in four rounds. He beat Jesus Villareal in three rounds the following April, and before the year was out, Charlo added Rodrigo Villareal and Deon Nash to his list of victories. In June, he knocked out Dwayne Jones in the first round. 

Demetrius Hopkins, a former light-welterweight contender with a record of 33 wins, 2 losses, and 13 knockouts, took against Charlo on June 8, 2013. In October, Charlo fought again, this time against veteran boxer Jose Angel Rodriguez, who had a record of 17 victories, 2 defeats, and 1 draw.

Charlo passed the biggest challenge of his career and looked pretty good doing it as he easily outboxed Rosado to win a lopsided 10-round unanimous decision, according to a November 2013 report. Gabriel Rosado is a veteran boxer and former world title challenger from Philadelphia. 

At Montreal, Quebec’s Bell Centre, on May 24, 2014, Charlo defeated Charlie Ota.

On March 28, Charlo competed in a doubleheader against former world championship contender Vanes Martirosyan at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. In a somewhat contentious unanimous decision, Charlo prevailed. The results were 97–93, 96–94, and 96–94. 

It was revealed that Charlo would face John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) for the vacant WBC light middleweight title during the annual WBC Convention in Kunming, China. On May 21, 2015, Charlo defeated his opponent via knockout.

In 2016, Charlo was scheduled to engage in two mandatory defenses at the WBC 54th Convention in Miami. In April 2017, he faced Charles Hatley and knocked him out to make his first defense of the WBC championship. By knocking out Lubin in the opening round of their fight on October 14 at the Barclays Center in New York City, Charlo successfully defended his WBC title.

In December 2018, Jermell Charlo defended his WBC light middleweight title against Tony Harrison in a doubleheader at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Charlo lost the fight by unanimous decision, marking his first defeat as a professional boxer. In June 2019, Charlo fought against Jorge Cota and won the bout by a third-round knockout.

After his initial loss, Charlo activated a rematch clause, and on June 23, 2019, Jorge Cota was his opponent at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Nevada. Cota was knocked out in the third round, giving Charlo the victory. After that, Charlo was scheduled to fight Harrison on December 21 at the Toyota Center in California. Charlo defeated Harrison by knockout in the eleventh round to become the second-ever world light middleweight champion.

Charlo was slated to defend his title against Jeison Rosario in a unification bout on September 26th, 2020 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. Charlo knocked out Rosario in the eighth round, unifying the super-welterweight division. Charlo’s next opponent was Castaño.

Charlo and Castaño fought to a controversial split draw in July 2021. Charlo won the rematch via Round 10 knockout and became the 7th male 4-belt undisputed light middleweight champion. The fight between Charlo and WBO No. 1 contender Tim Tszyu, which was supposed to take place on January 28, 2023, at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, Nevada, has been postponed since Charlo injured his hand while sparring.
