Jessica Eye was one of the biggest names missing weight ahead of UFC Las Vegas 2
The weigh-ins for UFC Las Vegas 2 seemed to be a shambles as many stars missed out on the correct weights.
Jessica Eye made the same error in her previous fight, but had major problems this time around. Her weight-cut seemed to take a huge toll on her, and she even called out for help while standing up.
She still missed her ideal weight by a quarter pound, and the main event will be a catchweight clash.
Cynthia Calvillo is the opponent for Eye, and it will be interesting to see how this fight goes. Eye put up a spirited defence as to how she messed up her weigh-in and even got into a heated battle with rival Joanne Calderwood.
The surprising aspect of this UFC fight card sees that four of the clashes from the 10 will be catchweight events.
Two fights from the preliminary card are catchweight while two from the main card will also be catchweight too.
This just goes to show much of a problem cutting weight or making weight has become in the UFC, and missing out isn’t something new.
Big matches getting affected
There have been calls from some corners to look into the weight divisions of the UFC and possibly have more to help the fighters.
However, many have also suggested that fighters need to avoid making dramatic weight cuts just prior to the fight.
Tony Ferguson did that before his UFC 249 bout against Justin Gaethje. He cut weight two weeks before the fight, and did it again to reach the proper weight.
Some suggested that this additional weight cut was mind games. However, a few even claimed that this had hurt his chances of doing well in the title bout.
Gaethje dominated Ferguson during the later rounds and won the interim UFC Lightweight title. Some other big titles fights have been affected by missed weight cuts too, Khabib Nurmagomedov won his first title in the UFC after his rival missed his weight.
Such cuts hurt a card, especially if it is for the title. Missing weight disqualifies a fighter from winning the title, and having four fights at catchweight makes it a bit of a mockery for the fans.
Sure, the action might be brutal and we might see some huge knockouts or performances. However, the UFC and their stars need to get this weight cut angle right.
