James Alan Johnston is an American music composer and musician. He is best known for his time with WWE. Over the last three decades he has composed and recorded entrance theme music for various WWE wrestlers.
Johnston’s career began composing soundtracks for animated and industrial films, which led to working for the television networks HBO and Showtime. During the 1980s Johnston met Brian Penry, art director for the professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
He soon began working under Vince McMahon to create theme music for wrestlers. WWF began releasing Johnston-produced theme music as a compilation album beginning with WWF Full Metal: The Album in 1995.
WWF The Music, Volume 3 achieved platinum status in the United States, signifying one million sales, while WWF The Music, Volume 4 reached number five on the Canadian Albums Chart.
In 2001, WWF The Music, Vol. 5 reached number two on the Billboard 200 and number five on the Canadian and UK Albums Chart. In April 2013, the entrance theme of Fandango reached number 44 on the UK Singles Chart.
He has written over 10,000 pieces of music, many of which are as highly regarded as the wrestlers themselves. In later years, he regularly collaborated with mainstream hip-hop and rock musicians such as Motörhead, Disturbed and several others.
