Jiri Prochazka’s Troubled Early Life: Everything you need to know about his adversities

Jiří Procházka, the Czech professional mixed martial artist who has taken the UFC by storm, didn’t have an easy start in life. Born on October 14, 1992, in Znojmo, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), his journey to becoming a celebrated UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was marked by adversity and challenges.

One of the significant hardships in Procházka’s early life was the loss of his father when he was just 6 years old. Coping with such a loss at a young age is never easy, but it was a crucial chapter in Procházka’s life that would ultimately shape his resilience and determination.

During his youth, Procházka was an active participant in various sports, including amateur football for TJ Družstevník Hostěradice. However, it was his involvement in other activities that would raise eyebrows. Procházka was not just a budding martial artist; he was also an avid freestyle BMX rider and a floorball player.

What truly sets Procházka’s early life apart is his engagement in street fights. In his teenage years, he was involved in these altercations nearly weekly, having participated in over 100 of them. This pattern of behavior eventually led him to join the hooligan club affiliated with FC Zbrojovka Brno, his local football team. This club was known for its involvement in organized group street fights with supporters of rival teams, including intense 30-on-30 brawls.

It was during this tumultuous period in his life that Procházka had his first encounter with mixed martial arts, setting him on a path that would transform his life. A friend introduced him to videos of legendary kickboxer Ramon Dekkers and renowned mixed martial artists Mirko Filipovic and Fedor Emelianenko. However, what truly sparked his interest in the world of combat sports was the film “Never Back Down.” Inspired by the movie, he began his martial arts journey, focusing on Thai boxing as a starting point.

Jiří Procházka’s early life was far from ordinary, marked by hardship, adversity, and a turbulent involvement in street fights. Nevertheless, it was these very challenges that laid the foundation for his remarkable journey in mixed martial arts, where he would go on to become a UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and a highly-ranked contender in the world of combat sports. His story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

The Beginning of a Fighting Career

Prochazka made his professional MMA debut in April 2012, stepping into the cage for the Gladiator Fighting Championship. At that time, it was the most prominent MMA promotion in his native Czech Republic. Over the following two years, he rapidly accumulated a 7–2 record, showcasing his natural talent and dedication to the sport.

In his tenth professional bout, Prochazka achieved a significant milestone by winning the inaugural GCF Light Heavyweight Championship. His memorable victory came in the form of a spectacular flying knee knockout against Czech MMA pioneer Martin Šolc at GCF 26 FN in December 2013. This fight not only went viral in the Czech Republic but also earned Prochazka the prestigious ‘Czech Fight of the Year’ award.

After amassing a record of 14–2–1 during his early years in MMA, Jiri Prochazka signed a contract with the Rizin Fighting Federation in 2015, making him the first Czech fighter to join the renowned Japanese promotion.

Prochazka’s journey through Rizin was marked by impressive performances, including participation in the Heavyweight Grand Prix and earning a reputation as one of the most exciting fighters in the promotion. His time in Rizin also set the stage for his eventual entry into the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

In January 2020, Prochazka signed with the UFC and made his debut against former UFC Light Heavyweight title challenger Volkan Oezdemir in July 2020. He marked his arrival in the UFC with a spectacular knockout victory and a Performance of the Night bonus.

Prochazka’s remarkable journey in the UFC reached its pinnacle when he became the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion by defeating Glover Teixeira in June 2022. This historic victory made him the first Czech fighter to capture a UFC championship, earning him the admiration of fans worldwide.
